How to Keep Your Cat Healthy Indoor

Welcoming a cat into your home brings immense joy and responsibility. As a cat owner, ensuring your feline friend’s health and happiness is fundamental. While indoor living provides safety from outdoor dangers, it also poses unique challenges for maintaining your cat’s well-being and satisfying their natural instincts.

Provide a Balanced Diet

Ensure a balanced and nutritious diet for your cat. Avoid overfeeding to prevent obesity, a common issue among indoor cats. Consult your veterinarian for dietary recommendations customized to your cat’s age, weight, and health status.

Encourage Physical Activity and Mental Stimulation

Encourage physical activity through interactive play sessions. Provide toys that stimulate their hunting instincts, such as feather wands, hiding spots, toy mice, spiders, laser pointers, or puzzle feeders. Add cat trees or shelves for climbing and exploration; our feline friends love having access to a window for birdwatching and observing the outdoors. Regular play and exercise prevent obesity, alleviate boredom, and promote mental stimulation.

Create an indoor garden – Cat Grass

Cats love cat grass or catnip, and these plants are completely safe for them. You can find them at pet stores and plant them at home, providing your cat with a natural and safe environment to explore and relax. If you live in a small apartment, don’t worry about the space needed for the cat grass; it’s easy to plant and can be done in small pots.

We plant the cat grass in some small pots that used to be a toy feeder, but he didn’t play with it. So, we decided to repurpose them for the cat grass, and he really enjoys it (see below).

    Maintain a Safe Environment

Eliminate potential hazards in your home to ensure your cat’s safety. Secure toxic substances like household cleaners, medications, and plants out of reach. Keep electrical cords hidden or protected to prevent chewing. Keep anything you think your cat might play with, and that could potentially harm them, securely stored or out of reach.

    Prioritize Regular Veterinary Visits

Schedule annual wellness exams, vaccinations, and parasite prevention treatments with your veterinarian. Consult them regarding any necessary control measures tailored to your cat’s lifestyle. Promptly address any concerns or changes in your cat’s behavior or health.
